Finding Daily Goodness in Times of Challenge and Change

When the world feels heavy, it can be hard to notice the good around us. News often highlights conflict, division, and loss, which can weigh on caregivers, professionals, parents, and advocates alike. Yet, even in difficult times, positive change is happening. Recognizing these moments of progress is a powerful way to build resilience and hope.

At True North, we believe in holding two truths at once: the pain we experience and the progress that continues. Hope is not naive; it guides us forward. Here are some meaningful examples of good happening in our communities today.

Even in heavy times, something new is always growing

Expanding Access to Mental Health Care

Mental health care is becoming more accessible across the country. States are investing in crisis services and school-based counseling programs. The 988 suicide and crisis system is strengthening, offering a dedicated lifeline for those in urgent need. Many communities now have mobile crisis teams that respond quickly and compassionately, reducing emergency room visits and providing support where people feel safest.

For example, in Oregon, mobile crisis units have helped reduce ER visits by 30% in some areas by offering immediate, on-site support. This approach not only eases pressure on hospitals but also respects the dignity of those in crisis.

Caregivers Are Finally Being Seen

Caregivers, both family members and professionals, have long carried heavy responsibilities with little recognition. Now, national attention is turning toward their needs. New respite programs give caregivers much-needed breaks. Proposals for caregiver tax credits aim to ease financial burdens. Workforce support initiatives are also gaining momentum to help professional caregivers thrive.

In states like New York, caregiver support programs have expanded, offering training and financial aid. These efforts acknowledge the vital role caregivers play in our communities and provide practical help to sustain them.

Young People Are Showing Up

Despite challenges, young people are stepping up in inspiring ways. Volunteerism, advocacy, and mutual aid projects are growing among youth. They are organizing food drives, supporting mental health awareness, and pushing for environmental action.

For instance, a youth-led group in Chicago recently organized a city-wide cleanup and tree-planting event, engaging hundreds of volunteers. Their energy and commitment remind us that the next generation is ready to build a better future.

Women-Owned Businesses Are Growing

Women, especially mothers and caregivers, are launching and expanding small businesses at some of the fastest rates in decades. Support through mentorship programs, grants, and community networks is helping women succeed economically and creatively.

In Texas, a nonprofit offers workshops and microloans to women entrepreneurs, resulting in a 40% increase in new women-owned businesses over the past two years. These businesses not only provide income but also foster community connections and innovation.

Breakthroughs in Medical and Neurological Research

Scientific progress continues in medical and neurological fields, offering hope for many. Researchers are developing new treatments for conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and depression. Advances in technology and understanding of the brain are opening doors to better care and improved quality of life.

For example, recent studies on neuroplasticity show promising results in helping stroke survivors regain function through targeted therapies. These breakthroughs demonstrate the power of science to transform lives.

Finding daily goodness does not mean ignoring difficulties. Instead, it means recognizing the progress and kindness that persist alongside challenges. By focusing on these positive developments, we can nurture hope and resilience in ourselves and our communities.

Look for the good around you each day. Celebrate small victories, support those who care for others, and join efforts that build a stronger, kinder world. Together, these actions create a path forward through change.
