š Finding Your Balance: A Lesson from the Autumn Equinox
Autumn Equinox | September 22
There is something special about that first hint of fall. The mornings feel a little cooler. The leaves begin preparing for their annual show. Pumpkin everything suddenly appears everywhere. Sweaters make their way back into the rotation, and somehow a warm drink just tastes better. But the Autumn Equinox offers us something more than the beginning of a new season. It gives us a beautiful reminder about balance.
āļøĀ A Moment Between Light and Dark
Around the Autumn Equinox, day and night are nearly equal in length. Nature reaches a brief point of balance before continuing its transition toward shorter days and longer nights.
And maybe there is a lesson for us in that.
We often think balance means getting everything perfectly divided: enough time for work, family, relationships, responsibilities, exercise, sleep, friends, and somehow ourselves.
That sounds lovely. It also sounds exhausting.
Real balance isn't about giving everything equal time. It's about recognizing what needs more of us right nowāand what may need less.
Some seasons require us to push forward. Others ask us to rest.
Some are about caring for others. Some require us to remember to care for ourselves.
And sometimes balance simply means admitting, āSomething needs to change.ā

šĀ Take a Lesson from the Trees
Fall gives us another powerful example: trees don't hold onto every leaf. They let go. Maybe we can, too.
As we enter a new season, consider what you might be carrying simply because you've been carrying it for a long time. An unrealistic expectation? A commitment that no longer fits?
The belief that you have to handle everything yourself? A grudge, regret, habit, or worry that is taking up more space than it deserves?
You don't have to completely reinvent your life this fall. Sometimes wellness begins by putting down one thing that has become too heavy.
āļøĀ Try a Fall Balance Check-In Take a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:
What is giving me energy right now?
What is draining more energy than it deserves?
Where am I saying āyesā when I really need to say ānoā?
Have I made room for rest, connection, laughter, and things I enjoy?
What am I ready to let go of?
What deserves more of my attention this season?
There are no perfect answers. The goal isn't to judge yourselfāit's simply to notice.
Awareness helps us adjust our direction.
š§Ā Balance Doesn't Mean Standing Still
A person riding a bicycle doesn't stay balanced by freezing in place. They make small adjustments over and over again. Life works much the same way. There will be weeks when work needs more from you. Times when family comes first. Seasons when grief, caregiving, health concerns, or unexpected changes take up more room. And there will hopefully be seasons filled with celebration, growth, adventure, and new beginnings.
Balance isn't a destination we finally reach. It's the practice of noticing when we've drifted too far in one direction and giving ourselves permission to adjust the course.
šĀ Make This Season a Little Lighter
Your fall reset doesn't have to involve a color-coded planner and a brand-new morning routine.
Keep it simple.
Take the walk.
Call the friend.
Schedule the appointment you've been putting off.
Protect an evening with nothing on the calendar.
Drink the cider.
Watch the leaves change.
Say no without writing a three-paragraph explanation.
Ask for help when you need it.
And make room for something that simply makes you happy.
Because wellness isn't only about accomplishing more. Sometimes it's about being present enough to enjoy the life happening around us.
šĀ Welcome the Season You're In
The Autumn Equinox reminds us that light and darkness can exist together. Change can be beautiful and uncomfortable. Letting go can make space for something new. And balance doesn't have to be perfect to be meaningful.
So as summer gives way to fall, perhaps the question isn't:
āDo I have everything balanced?ā
Instead, ask:
āWhat would help me feel a little more grounded in the season I'm in?ā
Listen to the answer. Then take one small step in that direction.
You don't have to have the whole path figured out. Sometimes you just need to find your balance, check your compass, and keep moving toward your True North. šš§
