Every June, communities across the United States celebrate Pride Month—a time to honor the history, resilience, contributions, and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride is both a celebration and a reminder of the ongoing work needed to create a world where all people can live authentically, safely, and with dignity.
At True North Wellness Services, we believe that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and supported. Pride Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of acceptance, understanding, and creating spaces where individuals can be their authentic selves.
The Meaning of Pride
Pride Month traces its roots to the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. What began as a movement for equality has grown into a global celebration of identity, love, resilience, and community.
For many, Pride is a joyful time of connection and visibility. For others, it can be a reminder of challenges they have faced, including discrimination, rejection, isolation, or barriers to healthcare and support services. Pride acknowledges both the victories achieved and the work that remains.

Why Acceptance Matters
Research consistently shows that acceptance and support significantly impact mental health and well-being. LGBTQ+ individuals who experience affirming relationships, supportive families, inclusive workplaces, and welcoming communities are more likely to experience positive mental health outcomes and a stronger sense of belonging.
Simple acts can make a meaningful difference:
Using a person's chosen name and pronouns.
Listening without judgment.
Challenging discrimination and harmful stereotypes.
Creating inclusive environments.
Educating ourselves about diverse experiences and identities.
Speaking up when others are treated unfairly.
Belonging is a basic human need. When people feel accepted for who they are, they are better able to thrive emotionally, socially, and physically.
Current Challenges Facing the LGBTQ+ Community
While Pride Month is a time of celebration, it is also important to recognize that many LGBTQ+ individuals are experiencing increased stress and uncertainty due to ongoing political debates, legislative changes, and public discussions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and protections.
Across the country, laws and policies affecting healthcare access, education, gender identity, and civil rights continue to evolve. Regardless of individual political viewpoints, these changes can create feelings of fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and isolation for many people and their families. For some, concerns about safety, acceptance, and access to supportive services are a daily reality.
Many LGBTQ+ individuals report feeling worried about what these changes may mean for themselves, their loved ones, and future generations. This uncertainty can contribute to chronic stress and emotional exhaustion, particularly for those who have already experienced discrimination or marginalization.
Pride Month reminds us that every person deserves respect, dignity, and the freedom to live authentically. It also challenges us to continue creating communities where all people feel safe, welcomed, and valued.
Mental Health and the LGBTQ+ Community
While tremendous progress has been made, many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face unique stressors that can affect mental health, including:
Social stigma and discrimination
Family rejection or strained relationships
Bullying and harassment
Barriers to affirming healthcare
Fear of being authentic in certain environments
Stress related to political and social uncertainty
These experiences can contribute to increased rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and emotional distress. Research has consistently found that LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly LGBTQ+ youth, are at greater risk for self-harm and suicidal thoughts compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers.
It is important to remember that these outcomes are not caused by a person's identity. Rather, they are often linked to experiences of discrimination, rejection, isolation, and lack of support. Supportive relationships, affirming communities, and access to mental health care can significantly reduce these risks.
Seeking help is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of courage, strength, and self-care.
Pride Across the Lifespan
Pride Month is for people of all ages. While much attention is often focused on younger generations, LGBTQ+ older adults have unique stories and experiences that deserve recognition.
Many older adults lived through periods when openly expressing their identity could result in discrimination, loss of employment, housing instability, or social isolation. Today, some continue to face barriers when seeking healthcare, long-term care services, and community support.
As professionals who work with older adults, caregivers, and families, it is important to ensure that all individuals feel respected, safe, and welcomed regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
At True North Wellness Services, we recognize that every older adult deserves compassionate, person-centered support that honors who they are and the life they have lived.
How We Can Support One Another
Pride Month offers an opportunity for everyone to become allies and advocates. Consider:
Learning about LGBTQ+ history and experiences.
Supporting LGBTQ+ friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues.
Attending community events that promote inclusion and understanding.
Encouraging conversations rooted in respect and compassion.
Seeking out organizations that support LGBTQ+ individuals and families.
Creating environments where people feel safe sharing who they are.
Speaking out against discrimination and stigma.
Small acts of kindness and acceptance can have a lasting impact. Often, simply letting someone know they are valued and accepted can make a tremendous difference.
